Presenting Company - Steel Dynamics, Inc.

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a major diversified producer of carbon steel. The fifth largest American steel producer, Steel Dynamics is consistently ranked as one of the top-performing companies in the steel industry. OmniSource Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary acquired in 2007, is the nation’s second largest metals recycler. In 2010, SDI began production of iron nuggets, an additional feedstock to the company’s steel mills, at its Mesabi Nugget operation in Minnesota. SDI employs 6,000 people in the U.S. and has a steelmaking capacity of over 6 million tons per year.

Steel Dynamics operates five mini mills—three in Indiana—that produce steel using energy-efficient and environmentally friendly electric-arc-furnace technology, melting recycled steel scrap to produce new steel products. Since its founding in 1993 and the start-up of its first mini mill at Butler, Indiana, in 1996, SDI has increased product diversity—extending its offerings from flat rolled steel to structural steel, merchant bars, specialty shapes, engineered bar steel, and rail. SDI finishes part of the steel it produces, including galvanizing, painting, and heat-treating. The company serves customers in a broad range of markets including automotive, appliance, construction, energy, mining, and industrial, commercial, and agricultural equipment.

Presenter: Keith Busse, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Keith Busse is the Chairman and CEO of Steel Dynamics. With two colleagues he founded Steel Dynamics as an entrepreneurial venture in Indiana in 1993. Steel Dynamics went public in 1996. As President, and now Chairman, Busse has guided SDI’s growth from a start-up to a Fortune 500 corporation. Prior to founding Steel Dynamics, Busse was a vice-president of Nucor Corporation, where he led the team at Crawfordsville, Indiana, that pioneered the world’s first commercial mini-mill production of flat-rolled steel.

A native of Fort Wayne, Busse earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance at the University of St. Francis and a Master’s in Business at IPFW. He has been awarded numerous honors within the steel industry and in Indiana, including the Sagamore of the Wabash. He is a director of Tower Financial Corporation, Accuride Corporation, and the Lutheran Health Network, and is Chairman of the Regional Chamber of Northeast Indiana.
