Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) is one of Indiana’s fastest growing public companies. The company started as an entrepreneurial venture in 1993 and went public in its first year of operation in 1996. Its initial production facility at Butler, Indiana, was a highly automated and productive mini mill producing flat-rolled steel from recycled steel scrap. Since then, the Fort Wayne-based company has built or acquired four additional mills, bringing total steelmaking capacity to more than 5 million tons per year, and growing to 6.7 million tons in 2009. Steel Dynamics operates eleven additional facilities that finish steel and fabricate steel building systems. SDI’s employment in Indiana has grown to 3,300 and to 6,000 U.S. employees. Steel Dynamics is the third-largest Indiana-based manufacturing company (publicly traded firms, based on revenues).

SDI is the nation’s fifth largest producer of carbon steel products and, due to the purchase of OmniSource Corporation, has become one of the largest metals recyclers in the North America. 2007 revenues reached $4.4 billion including partial-year contributions from two major acquisitions. SDI is among the most profitable American steel companies in terms of profit margins and operating profit per ton. FORTUNE’s 2008 annual ranking of the nation’s top 1,000 public companies, SDI climbed from number 614 to 517 based on 2007 sales growth.

Presenter: Keith Busse, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Keith Busse and two colleagues founded Steel Dynamics, Inc. in 1993. They raised $300 million and constructed a mini mill in northeastern Indiana that began producing flat-rolled steel in January 1996. Later in the year, Steel Dynamics went public. Under Busse’s leadership, the company has become one of the nation’s top steel producers.

Busse currently serves as Chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute, and previously was Chairman of the Steel Manufacturers Association. National honors he has received include the Association of Steel Distributors “Steel Man of the Year” (2004), the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers’ “Steel Maker of the Year” (2005), the Steel Manufacturers Association’s award for outstanding contributions to the mini mill steel industry (2006), and the “Steel Vision Award” (2008). In addition, he has been recognized for entrepreneurship for his role in the success of Steel Dynamics.

Busse is active in civic and fundraising endeavors, including the National Kidney Foundation and the Leukemia Society of America. He received the State of Indiana’s highest service award given to private citizens, and currently serves as a trustee of the University of Saint Francis and Tri-State University. He is a member of the Northeast Indiana Regional Economic Development board.

Prior to founding Steel Dynamics, Busse was employed 21 years by Nucor Corporation. There, he progressed from a plant accountant to Vice President and General Manager of the Flat Roll Division at Crawfordsville, Indiana. At Crawfordsville, he led a pioneering effort to construct, develop, and operate the world’s first commercial mini mill producing flat-rolled (sheet) steel. This energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technology became successful world-wide in producing low-cost, high-quality sheet steel using recycled steel scrap.

Busse holds a B.A. in finance from the University of Saint Francis (1973) and an MBA from Indiana University (1978). Purdue University has awarded him an honorary doctorate degree in engineering and University of Saint Francis, an honorary doctorate in business.
